It is estimated that there are 5.25 trillion tonnes of plastic and microplastics in the Ocean. Fishing nets are made from plastic polymers and crude oil, which use an environmentally damaging manufacturing process to produce. Often, when fishing nets are broken, they are discarded onto the ocean floor. This leads to marine life becoming trapped in the nets, resulting in detrimental harm to oceanic ecosystems.
The lack of an adequate global waste management infrastructure has made plastics a ubiquitous environmental pollutant with long-term consequences. Whether that’s by landfill waste or Ocean pollution. As plastic takes 1,000 years to fully biodegrade, our planet is rapidly becoming flooded with plastic waste. However, some brands are leaning towards alternative manufacturing processes which reuse old plastics to generate raw materials. Today, Econyl, a regenerated nylon is used by 2,000 brands worldwide. Aventura Swimwear uses Econyl, a regenerated form of nylon made from materials such as recycled fishing nets, carpets and tyres.

Aventura Swimwear was founded from a deep love for our shores. Founder and CEO Erik Leutar was inspired by his admiration for the ocean and his commitment to sustainability.
The brand’s story began in 2023, following two years of innovation and research into his product pipeline and customers, which culminated in his first collection in 2025.
